Mitigating Space Debris

Orbital debris and mitigation are pressing issues in today’s Satellite and NewSpace industry. On Episode 29 of The Satellite & NewSpace Matters Podcast, we spoke with Andrew Faiola, the Commercial Vice President at Astroscale, who is leading the charge in tackling them. 

Why has it taken so long for the industry to do something about debris and future mitigation? 

The proliferation of spacecraft in orbit has accelerated the realization that something needs to be done. Most people are familiar with the Kessler effect, which identified space debris as an issue a long time ago. But now, things are accelerating very quickly. 

The other part of it is technology, and its ability to deal with the issue is starting to catch up. 10 years ago, when Astroscale was founded, our founder had identified that there was going to be an issue, but there wasn’t then the technology to deal with it in a cost-effective way. Because of this burgeoning space economy and the number of companies that are operating in this space, the pace of technology and innovation is accelerating as well. It’s enabling us to start addressing an issue that wasn’t even able to be addressed just a couple of years ago.

What do you think is the viability of the long-term market for these missions beyond the next decade or so? 

The environment is going to get more and more crowded. What we want to do is both mitigate risk by removing large, dangerous objects and ensure that we’re not creating more small debris. In the long term, there is going to be a view towards technology helping remove the smaller pieces of debris as well. I look at all of these things as stepping stones to the in-orbit space economy that everybody talks about. 

Astroscale today is focusing on removing debris from orbit, but what we’re really good at is rendezvous and proximity operations. 10 or 20 years from now, we’re looking at more and more private industries in space, whether it’s human spaceflight, manufacturing, etc; those vehicles are all going to have to coexist together. They’re going to have to be flying, viewing and being serviced in space. Nobody wants to launch tonnes and tonnes of stuff from the ground because no matter how cheap a starship gets, you still have to start on Earth. Can’t we start to repurpose things that are already in orbit? How do we get to a circular economy in orbit rather than just deorbiting? That has to start somewhere. 

On a national scale, what more needs to be done? And more importantly, by whom? 

It needs to come from a number of places, all at the same time. Public awareness is key to putting pressure on legislators to actually enact laws. The industry can only do so much, it needs to come from both ends. Astroscale and others have done an extremely good job of influencing policy over the past years to the point where it is now recognised that the orbital environment has a pollution problem that needs to be sorted out, preferably before we have another tragedy of the commons. 

But what’s the next step to actual legislation or regulation? Historically, I would have come from the standpoint of ‘more regulation is bad’, right? Let the market sort itself out. But in the time that I’ve been here, I’ve actually realised that having the right regulatory framework in place that places the right incentives for behaviour rather than penalties is actually going to catalyse investment and innovation. We need that foundation in order to make a success of it, because this is a brand new market that we’re trying to develop. 

Without having public awareness and the right regulatory and legislative framework in place, it’s hard to make it work. We’ve seen this before in other areas, whether it’s cod fisheries in the North Atlantic, or the Amazon rainforest, everyone knows that they should behave better or things will go bad, but until the right frameworks are in place that incentivise the right behaviour, people will act in their own self-interest. 

To your point about who is responsible, is it national governments or international governmental organisations, I think everybody has a part to play in this. My background in communications for mobility, in-flight connectivity and maritime has shown me that there are organisations like the IMO that put rules of the road in place that people have to adhere to, but there’s national legislation as well. It is probably going to be a combination of all of those that help us move the industry forward.

How Tosibox is Reshaping OT Cyber Security

In Cyber Security, we are always looking for new, innovative ways to secure critical infrastructure. On Episode 29 of The Cyber Security Matters Podcast we spoke to Dmitriy Viktorov, the CTO of Tosibox, about how he’s bringing his experience with cloud protection solutions to a new market. Read on to find out more about securing data through OT networks. 

What are the main challenges associated with securing critical infrastructure?

I’m coming mainly from the IT security world, but now I’m jumping into what we call the industrial operational technology world. There are many similarities, especially on crates, but the OT and maybe IoT domains are lagging behind. They’re more conservative compared with IP or cybersecurity in general.

One thing that is quite important for customers is operational continuity. You can take some IT systems down for a short period of time if you need to patch it, update it or migrate it. In OT, it’s very difficult to do that because you are providing critical services, such as buildings, manufacturers, careers – you name it. You can’t take them down. If you want to apply a patch or you need to reconfigure something, that’s a big thing. 

We also know that the lifecycle for cybersecurity products is way longer than you might think because you don’t see the whole lifecycle. I remember when we were defining the lifecycle model, we said it would be a maximum of three years in OT, but it might actually be around five or even ten years in total. 

The other challenges in ICT and OT cybersecurity are the emphasis on legacy systems. There are several technologies in OT that are used by customers that rely on protocols, which have nothing to do with TCP IP. On the IT side, there are limited skills and technologies. It’s also about complexity and interdependencies – and again, a lack of patching and updates – and insider threats. Some infrastructures are physically exposed, which allows threats to get closer to them. 

How is Tosibox unique, and how does it solve some of those challenges?

Tosibox is in the specific niche of the whole of OT cybersecurity. However, we like focusing on network security. We are helping customers with at least one – or maybe a few – particular problems when it comes to OT cybersecurity and network segmentation. We are implementing access control, and we are making sure that our customers can do it easily, securely, and more automatically. Because, as I said previously, customers might use different technologies or different protocols, our unique proposition is that our platform is actually protocol-agnostic and even industry-agnostic. Even if you use old legacy technologies and devices, Tosibox makes it easy to connect with your IT network and then manage it remotely.

Exploring the Applications of Edge Computing 

As cloud computing has grown across the connectivity industry, so has its counterpart, edge computing. On Episode 20 of The Connectivity Matters Podcast, we were joined by Ariel Efrati, the CEO of Telco Systems Edgility, to discuss the applications of this cutting-edge technology. Read on to find out more. 

“You’ve probably experienced being in a hotel when everybody wants time to go to breakfast in the morning. So what is the most scarce resource in a hotel? It’s the elevator. If you’re staying on a high floor, you don’t get an elevator. It’s not smart enough – but why is that? It’s very simple to count how many people you have on each floor and send them the right size elevator using basic logic. As long as you have a camera and a computer, it should be possible. That’s edge computing. 

When you talk about manufacturing cars, it’s done with robots. They are welding things while the entire line moves on a belt. When the belt is misaligned, you need to recalibrate everything because otherwise the robots will weld in the wrong places. But if you could communicate between those robots because they all have cameras and a gyroscope to identify their position in space, you wouldn’t need to shut the line down. Each robot could adjust as necessary. That’s another real-life example of how edge computing can be used. 

These are real examples that we are faced with. I think traffic management is a great thing. In each traffic light, you could integrate several traffic lights, a radar, and a camera to help the flow of people. This is edge computing by nature. Traffic light signalling hasn’t changed in 40 years – we’re still using a person to set the timers based on traffic as it was on the day they were there. That’s not where we should be. We have cameras that can count the cars you can integrate that data with traffic law to moderate the traffic. Again, that’s edge computing. 

It’s endless when you think about it, and all it requires is an operating system, device and whatever function you want. It could be an AI function, it could be a visual inspection, counting, cropping, controlling – whatever you want. It could also exist in retail today. If you put enough cameras in a large retail store, you could take something from the shelf and be automatically charged for it. There’s no cashier, the system just automatically recognises what you do and charges it to your account. 

It could also apply to digital signage. These systems could identify you and show you more relevant ads as you walk into a store. That’s personalization. All of these examples are edge computing with integrated cameras and devices working on a local network to process huge amounts of data without having to transmit it to a data centre, which also creates more latency. With applications like traffic management, it has to be precise because otherwise it will cause traffic accidents. This is what edge computing is, and we’re going to see a reversal in how our data is processed, going towards edge computing.”

Developing Niche Satellite Applications 

As the satellite industry develops, there are increasing numbers of potential applications for the technology. On The Satellite & NewSpace Matters Podcast we were joined by Kevin Fielder, who is the VP of Sales for the global cruise and ferries market at Anuvu. Kevin shared the work that Anuvu are doing to bring satellite connectivity to the luxury travel market. Here are his insights: 

You work in a very interesting niche in the SATCOM world with a focus on the cruise and ferry market. What seems to be the most interesting aspect of the market right now?

The pandemic – which really disrupted the industry from a force majeure perspective, and squeezed disposable income so that people were not able to travel as much – obviously had a detrimental impact on any kind of disposable spending market. It really hamstrung the industry. Coming out of it, however, there was a new technology from our friends at SpaceX that completely disrupted the market. When I say disrupted, it’s not a bad connotation, I just mean that it has changed the market. 

As people came out of their homes after COVID they were attached to a very fast, high speed internet connection with low latency. Coming back aboard cruise lines, the expectation was that they would have the same experience. It just so happened that at the same point in time we gained the technology that gave them the ability to do that. That situation meant that something that might have had a slow adoption process got ramped up really fast, based upon people’s appetite for that type of technology. This is the experience that people have wanted to have in the cruise environment for years, and now we’ve given them the best of the best available connectivity out on open water. 

Those two things – one being a bad experience for everybody from a health perspective, and the other being a transformative technology that came into play quickly at the same time – have really changed the cruise market for the better. 

What are you most excited or concerned about in relation to this industry?

The markets have been clamouring for LEO (low earth orbit) connectivity options. Starlink jumped to the forefront of delivery on that, and OneWeb is out in the market as well. Amazon is doing their groundwork to get their first satellites up at the moment too. There are plenty of smaller companies who aren’t publicising the fact that they’re launching LEO satellite capabilities for things like IOT and cell service, but they’re in the market too. I think you’re going to see more and more of that in the very near future, because it can reach so many more people than the traditional model. 

There’s a tendency to think that once LEO comes about, the geostationary satellite service will go away, but there’s still a need for it, and maybe a different way of consuming it. That may mean configuring it as a failsafe, because it has much higher latency, but it’s still a good quality product available just about anywhere globally. In addition, there are some models that are consumption based. If you don’t want to consume as much data, you may put some non latency tolerant traffic over those. If you’re going to be paying for it anyway, you might as well utilise it. If I sent you an email, you really don’t care if it arrives now or 30 seconds from now, so why would I use a low latency service at a higher price? Save that capability for a passenger who needs it for streaming.

Integrating AI with Telco Connectivity 

As AI becomes more and more integrated into the modern world, all areas of business are finding ways to adopt and adapt. On Episode 19 of The Connectivity Matters Podcast we were joined by Stephen Spellicy, the Vice President of Marketing, Enablement & Business Development at VMware, to talk about how the connectivity industry is moving towards AI adoption. Read on for his insights. 

Is there a genuine motivation for operators to bring in AI?

Well, this is a conundrum that many have. They’re building the new network and expecting new incremental revenue, then the next step is figuring out ‘how do I reap the benefits of that?’ Part of the business strategy should be growing your footprint and retaining it so that you can drive higher levels of ARPU out of your consumer subscribers and enterprise customers. The companies that are looking at being data-driven in the way they build their business and how they execute in the market are the ones who are likely going to survive. 

We’ve seen consolidation across the board in the wider industry (not only in telecom and technology) where the larger players gobbling up smaller companies. Where you see more of this consolidation and the shedding of non-productive assets, markets are becoming more focused on the outcomes of their business strategy. It starts with data and the injection of an advanced labour force that is more keen to understand the trends of our technology sphere. Data science is an area where telecoms probably lack skilled labour. Maybe in the next five years, we’ll see more availability of these resources. But today, telecom should take that first mover advantage to pull those folks into their organisation and start injecting data into everything they do. 

A common perception is that telco is not as exciting as other applications for AI or data science, so how could they attract more talent as an industry?

If you’ve already built a new network and you’re trying to drive higher revenue, you’ll need the right talent. This talent isn’t cheap, but it’s an investment in the future. Vigorous recruiting, both in the field and outside of the field, is necessary. What I mean by that is that telecom traditionally looks for people with a vast understanding of wireless cellular technology, traditional fixed line type technologies and networking backgrounds, but they may need to look into adjacencies. Where are the problem solvers who understand data models and data science, who can be applied to solving telco challenges? Looking across various adjacencies and verticals to find the right kind of talent is going to be effectively an empowering element as companies move forward. 

Training, enabling and investing in your labour force is also really important. Adopting some of these methodologies creates more opportunities for the people already in your company. In other words, utilising the resources you have to drive the highest level of productivity will enable your team to be creative in problem-solving. One of the best ways to create a happy and productive workforce is to give them really hard problems to solve and let them find creative ways to solve those problems. It creates a level of engagement and interest in their job, and it creates more loyalty to the company because it shows that this is a company that challenges them, rewards them when they succeed and invests in them – which are all essential ingredient ingredients that telco needs to consider as they develop their labour force moving forward.

How much responsibility does the telco industry have for ensuring the correct use of AI alongside this new talent?

The first piece of any journey with AI, particularly when we’re talking about data or using information in order to dictate outcomes, is effectively finding a programmatic way to treat data in a sensitive way. With customer-related user-related data, personal identifiable information, etc, you have to make sure that the data that you collect is protected to ensure the privacy and security of your customers. Just from a broad industry perspective across not only telco but any enterprise verticals, this is a common practice that starts with protecting the information that you’re collecting and utilising it as a part of the build of your models. 

The other piece on the ethical side would be to do no harm. You have to use technology to improve operations, the quality of service for your customers and the lives of your employees. Effectively, when you look at your labour force, how do you get the very best out of the team that’s in place? We’re not trying to use automation and AI to make jobs obsolete, we’re trying to use automation and AI to make those jobs easier for those people to get done. Looking at it that way, you’ll never have enough people to do the jobs. These skilled workers don’t have enough time in the day, and you don’t have enough heads in front of computer screens to get the job done, especially as we build out the 5G network and beyond to 6G. The enormity of that challenge is too large for the workforce we have today, so you need technology to augment those people.

What Does the Future Hold for Cyber Security and Its Relationship with AI?

On Episode 26 of The Cyber Security Matters Podcast we were joined by Simon Hunt, the Chief Product Officer at Reveald. Simon is a prolific industry leader and inventor within cybersecurity and technology, specialising in protecting financial information. He also sits on a number of boards within the Cyber Security industry and volunteers with the American Red Cross. During the episode, Simon shared his insights into the relationship between Cyber Security and AI, which you can read here:

“I am super excited about the possibilities of generative AI. But, let’s remember that generative AI is guessing what it thinks the most likely word to come next will be. It’s fascinating how much reasonable content it has created just by guessing what word comes next using statistics. That’s fascinating to me. Ask Chat GPT to write a children’s story or love letters to your wife and it’s amazing. 

But the eye opener for me was that the systems I built create very complicated output, and you have to have a huge amount of expertise to interpret what it generates. We do a lot of work to turn that into stories that people understand. We found that we could throw that raw data into a generative AI model and it would make a readable explanation. If I wanted to tell somebody what their problem is, it would do that perfectly for me. 

I realised I could do it in Japanese, or Baja, I could tell it to write it in any language – and it’s not translating the English output into Japanese, it’s translating the raw data into Japanese. The translation or output is still a beautiful, understandable story. My challenge was taking raw data and making it simpler, because there used to be a huge natural language problem. Now it’s generative AI’s problem. 

Now, of course, we have the problem of misinterpretation, but we have the opportunity to eliminate the requirement for super talented experts and make our process more scalable. That is intriguing to me. I’m not trying to automate everything; I’m saying that we should automate as much as possible and redirect human talent. 

For me, AI is not discovering new things, it’s making our discoveries consumable and actionable for a wider range of people. Who knows where it will go? But now we can take entry level people that are at the beginning of their cybersecurity awareness, and make them as powerful as the experts of today. If we can do that, then we can cut the legs off this problem. 

Fundamentally, it’s not intelligence. AI is not adding any unique insight. It’s shocking how little unique insight we need to write a two page children’s story just by predicting the words that come next. However, we need to be careful with our expectations. You can’t ask it to solve cancer. If it came up with an answer, it would just have regurgitated something that a person has already tried. 

There is a challenge. If you ask AI to compare two companies, it will generate an output that would take you hours to do by hand. As a timesaver it’s amazing, but schools are worrying because it’s becoming indistinguishable from natural language, so how do you tell it’s not plagiarism? It’s a tool that we should use to take complicated information and make it consumable by people who are not domain experts. I can solve that industry challenge with predictive text.”

The Impact of Thermal Satellite Images

On Episode 27 of The Satellite & NewSpace Matters Podcast we were joined by Tobias Reinicke, the CTO and Co-Founder at Satellite Vu. Tobias has an extensive background in geography and computing with a career spanning over two decades in the aerospace industry. His main focus has been creating advanced solutions for global mapping. Satellite Vu is on a mission to build high resolution thermal data through the launch of their first satellite, the HOTSAT-1 in June, and the recent release of the first light imageries. Tobias explained the importance of using these images to protect our planet, and how companies can plan for the future using the same technology. Read on for his insights. 

How can organisations use thermal imaging data to change their behaviours?

As a company we can detect heat loss at a very high level. Any industry or activity that is based on heat production, we can infer activity levels of. So you can imagine that companies that run large equipment, factories, refineries, or that sort of infrastructure, would request data for their own sites and connected sites that they may not have easy access to, to assess where they are losing heat. Because we’re a global service, we can give them a holistic view of all their assets and sites, and provide a benchmark for their site, showing if they are running at a certain level of capacity. 

Companies have a mandate according to their emissions and wastage of heat that they need to abide by. We can show you whether your sites are achieving that or not. At the same time, if you’ve made some changes, we can show you what the before and after looks like so that you can validate that your changes have made an effect. As legislation and policies come into place in many countries, we are going to be able to help companies assess the situation and help them make the decision with our datasets. We hope to play a key part in monitoring assets that are coming online, are supposed to be coming offline, or are being retrofitted to be more efficient.

What are some of the benefits of infrared imaging sensors compared to other types of sensors?

There’s a bunch of other sensors, such as optical, where you’d see what the sun reflects, but that precludes you from collecting data at night. Again, you can derive activity by looking at cars or trucks being in place, etc, but you can’t see any actual heat losses or infer anything else. You have synthetic aperture radar, which can look at nighttime as well, which is the closest you can get to thermal on that sort of capability. But again, it doesn’t give you any colour because it’s a radar bounce, so it’s a bit tricky to interpret sometimes. Otherwise you can see actual activity by looking at the hyperspectral multispectral solar solutions, which look at gas emissions. Companies like GHGSat are looking at anything to do with emissions, which our bandwidth does not allow us to do. But on the other side, GHGSat can’t derive heat loss. A combination of sensors are going to create the best picture.

What can we learn from this data from the initial images?

The first image we got from the satellite was at Rome, it was a nighttime image, and you can very clearly see some heat around the place. Looking in the northwest of the image was the Vatican, which showed up as really hot. The reason for this was most probably because it is made up of large slabs of concrete. When we get into this city analysis and city planning, materials like concrete, stone, brick and tarmac retain heat really well, and emit it at night, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s fine in the winter, but not too great in the summer when you’re creating urban heat islands. Otherwise, in Rome, we can see a nice river flowing through and you can see that the water is very cool. You can see the green areas are much cooler. You can infer a lot from this and play with it on the urban planning front. 

How can satellite imaging help mitigate the effects of climate change? 

We will be a monitoring service. We will be able to monitor what’s going on; there’s not much else we can do other than that. But I think that if you don’t know where your biggest heat losses and emissions are, you’re not going to be able to do anything about it. That’s very much what we’re there for – to give it a global, holistic and uniform view of the sites that are emitting the most heat and therefore producing the most waste. Asset owners and policymakers want to know about that, and then when they’ve made the changes they want to know how they’ve actually improved the situation. That’s how satellite imaging will help.

Improving Gender Diversity in the Telco Industry

On the Women in Telco miniseries on The Connectivity Matters Podcast we’re shining a spotlight on diversity. In the miniseries’ fifth episode we spoke to Alex Foster, the Managing Director of Division X at BT, about her experiences as a woman in the telco industry and how the sector could improve gender diversity. How do you think the attitudes towards diversity and inclusion have changed throughout your career so far in telco?

We’ve always spent a lot of time looking at diversity and inclusion. We’ve done an awful lot of work in terms of the barefoot computing initiatives. Our volunteers help to make sure that all children feel that they’ve got the ability to really enjoy the STEM world. That then moves up the chain in terms of what we do, both at senior school and university, where we run initiatives around coding for girls. The work that we do, particularly around cybersecurity, really helps make sure that people aren’t frightened about technology. It’s like riding a bike, it can seem frightening before you start. It’s the same thing with STEM; making it accessible means taking all of that fear out of it. And as a consequence of that, we’re seeing many more women coming into technology as well. We’ve got huge levels of representation for women, from apprentices and graduates and up through to our leadership roles within the organisation as well.

BT has a female CEO now. What impact do you think that will have?

It’s an important representation of women in leadership roles. I think that that will encourage more and more women into technology roles, because it just shows you how inclusive telecoms can be, and particularly how inclusive we as an organisation can be, and it shows that we are a very accessible workplace. Nobody should be worried about coming into a STEM role, because you can go from being an apprentice to being a CEO, and everything in between.

What challenges did you – or do you – face as a woman in the telco industry?

Some of the barriers have changed since I joined the industry. My children are on their way to university now, but if I think back to when I had maternity leave, coming back after only three months was quite challenging. Since then, huge amounts have changed. You can get a year’s maternity leave or alternative provisions in terms of how you return to work. At BT, we’re really proud that 87% of people who go on maternity leave come back into our organisation. 

The other challenges I had were things that are now mainstays like lactating rooms – those were definitely not common back when I started. 20 years on, the world has changed significantly. We’ve got great maternity policies, great return back to work policies and great facilities for people who want to carry on and bring their babies into the organisation and carry on feeding them at work. All of those provisions are there now. 

How do you think organisations can make the workplace more accessible to everyone?

Inclusivity is expansive. One topic close to my heart is dyslexia. I work with Kate Griggs and the Made By Dyslexia organisation. We have a chapter of the organisation here at BT, which helps us look at Dyslexia as a superpower, because dyslexic thinking can be very creative and join the dots in a different way. It’s absolutely about creating an inclusive place for all types of people to come and work with us. So for me, inclusion doesn’t just mean gender inclusivity, it’s all of those facets of identity. Having a space like the Made By Dyslexia chapter in a workplace can really empower people to share what makes them different and recognise their own strengths. We also use technology to solve some of their challenges too, such as using Word’s spell-check or speech to text ability. It all just helps us recognise what skills we can bring to the company. 

Do you have any specific recommendations for how companies can be more inclusive?

I think that it’s about making sure that when you’re starting to hire into the organisation, you’ve got diverse lists to start with. If your list isn’t diverse it’s going to be quite hard to create an inclusive environment. It definitely starts with having a look at how you hire and who you hire, and making sure that those that are hiring are starting to think about skills and inclusivity at the same time. Organisations that are on an inclusive journey can lean into external networks, such as Women in Technology, both from a learning and networking point of view, but also as a pipeline for talent. If you’re engaged with these groups, your organisation will start to show up as an organisation for whom inclusivity is important, and candidates will be drawn to you. You’ll then start to find a plethora of candidates who want to work at your organisation because you are seen to be inclusive, and you’re behaving in an inclusive manner.

Navigating the Fast-Paced Cyber Security Sector

On Episode 25 of The Cyber Security Matters Podcast we were joined by Jaye Tillson and John Spiegel, who are passionate cyber security evangelists and the co-hosts of the Zero Trust Forum podcast. Jaye has over 20 years of experience in the cyber security industry, across IT infrastructure and zero trust architecture, while John’s background in the industry includes overseeing major projects for global retailer Columbia Sportswear. Read on to find out their perspectives on why the cyber security industry is moving so quickly. 

John: “I talked about paying off your security, which is also referred to in the industry as ‘defence in depth’. So why are people looking to move into this model? Security’s got to be simplified and streamlined. Visibility is hard when you have eight or nine point products that are chained together for remote access, or when your products don’t have API’s that integrate. Security is really hard when you just think about technology and you don’t think about the business outcomes. 

Primarily, what’s driving this change is simplified platforms which bring together technologies that were siloed. Companies are also looking to reduce their costs, not only from a vendor perspective, but from an operational perspective. On top of that, both Jay and I fell into security because of the way applications and workforce are distributed. Now you’ve got to have a different approach to security. Similarly, the way networking and security is transformed and delivered is changing. 

For you to be a player in it from a vendor perspective, you have to have the full stack. You can’t just be a networking vendor and rely on another vendor for the security aspect anymore, you have to bring both together because that’s what provides visibility, simplicity and the platform effect, which is what customers are looking for. 

Another interesting piece is David Holmes (who is an analyst for Forrester) did some research, and they asked customers who had moved over to this SASE and SSE model if they are still using the same vendors as they were using previously. Is there any buyer’s remorse? Are they looking to go back or maintain that relationship? The answer in almost 85% of the cases was ‘No, there’s no buyer’s remorse, we’re happy and we’re not looking to go backwards. This is a better approach.’ What does that mean for the industry? It means that the incumbent vendors out there are under threat. That’s why you will continue to see consolidation within the industry.”

Jaye: “I realised that having people on my network who were able to go everywhere and see everything or potentially hack everything was concerning. That’s how zero trust came about, which is built on the concept of only giving access to devices and applications that people need access to for their roles. You constantly check in, monitor and give visibility, and both SASE and SSE are based on that structure. 

Then you’ve got the consolidation element within the market. Recent statistics show that CISOs have over 100 security tools within their environment, which is impossible to manage. That’s because if you have a problem within the environment you won’t know which vendor to go to, where the gap is, what tool it is, or what you’re looking at. Consolidation is bringing more products under one banner and within one user interface, which simplifies your security. Cyber Security is a difficult place to work because you’re constantly under threat or being attacked, the legislation is constantly changing and it’s a very high pressure environment. If you can consolidate and become more simple, not only is it easier from a support perspective, it gives a better user experience.

There’s talk that ransomware is kind of dropping off, but that’s clearly not the case. We need to make everybody’s life simpler by removing and reducing the attack surface and simplifying administration, product and efficiency for the users. Zero trust is a huge thing in the USA, and the government is doing things about it which are flowing down into legislation across EMEA. Once people start to realise that their tools sit on top of that, there’s going to be a snowball effect.”
